Today I want to talk about online shopping and what’s great about it and also what’s not so great about it sometimes. So personally, I do most of my clothing shopping in store, and the majority of the rest of my regular product shopping online. I was chatting with a friend of mine just the other day and he was saying that he has to always shop for clothing in stores because he has to try things on. I’m totally the same way. But here’s where having a few favorite brands can help you save some time.
For example, let’s talk about shoes. If you know that you’re a size 10 in say Allen Edmonds because you already own a pair or you’ve already tried on a pair, it’s easy to shop online and order the correct size because you already know. The same thing applies for shirts and pants. Here’s another example. I own several different Nordstrom dress shirts. I know that with the calibrate brand, which is a Nordstrom house brand, I know that I’m a 15 1/2 32X 33 in their slim fit. I also know that the Nordstrom non-iron dress shirt in trim fit, the same size is slightly bigger, but still fits pretty well. Knowing this, I can easily save myself a trip to the mall and order new shirts online and feel pretty confident that the sizing will work just fine.
I Heard about a free website & plug-in called Shoptagr a few years ago and it always sounded pretty cool because it seemed like a great tool to help me shop smarter. I never really explored the benefits though until recently because to be honest, I work six or seven days a week and if I do get a day off, the last thing I want to do is spend the day at the mall fighting crowds just to shop for a few regular items. A good example for me would be white dress shirts. I go through a white dress shirt in about six or eight months. They just start getting discolored and a little ratty so I’m always replacing my white dress shirts. The cool thing with Shoptagr is you can make different categories of items and set up different alerts and it’ll let you know when that particular item goes on sale. Also, if the item is out of stock, it will alert you when it comes back in stock.
Shoptagr is actually really cool and it’s unbelievable how much money you can save by using it. I’ve got a few different categories set up, and it seems every few days I get an alert that something I saved is now on sale. An example of this would be some Magnani single monk shoes that were $350 regular, and I just got an alert yesterday that the shoes are on sale now for $234! The other thing that I’m looking forward to because Black Friday is coming up, retailers start their sales 1 to 2 weeks before Black Friday (which is basically right now), and major price drops happen about four days before Black Friday. Keep in mind though as prices start to drop, inventory also drops, so having alerts set up with Shoptagr is a huge game changer and gives you the advantage especially for Black Friday online shopping.
They work with over 4000 stores and brands and it’s not just clothing. You can save items for your home like appliances and furniture, and even electronics. I like using the desktop version, but there’s also an app for your phone that works the exact same way. Shoptgr now can also automatically apply relevant coupon codes at check out.
I realize that most guys don’t like spending all day at the mall walking around from store to store, trying to find a sales person to help, waiting in line for the changing room and then trying on a bunch different things. Also, as the holidays get closer and closer, crowded parking lots, crowded malls, and long lines are just a huge pain to deal with. Shopping online can save a ton of time and a ton of money. The major downside of online shopping is rolling the dice with sizes. I’ve ordered a lot of items online that came in either too big or too small and I’ve had to go through the return process. Honestly though, even if you order an item and it doesn’t fit, most retailers offer super easy returns. One thing you can do is order two different sizes and then return the one that doesn’t fit. For example, say you’re looking at sweaters, order the size you think you are, and then order one size down. It’s generally pretty easy to return the item that didn’t work out. OK, make sure you watch the video to see how it works.
