Today I want to talk about the backpack versus the messenger bag and which one might be right for you. So the backpack versus the messenger bag. I feel like a lot of guys are either in one camp or another. You’re either a backpack guy or a Messenger bag guy. I’m purposely excluding the regular briefcase in this video because the traditional briefcase doesn’t have a shoulder strap. If you’d like me to make a video about briefcases, please let me know by giving this video a thumbs up or leaving a comment down below.
So personally, I own Messenger bags as well as backpacks because at least for me, each one serves a different purpose. In terms of style, the Messenger bag, traditionally, is a little more style forward and fashionable. The backpack was mainly designed for ultimate functionality while keeping your hands free. Traditionally, If you wanted something more formal for an office setting, you went with a briefcase. Then what happened was the briefcase started to get softer and more pliable and then the shoulder strap was added and that became the messenger bag.
This messenger bag and backpack are from MAHI leather. I love talking about MAHI leather because I love their products. So I recently flew to San Francisco and then drove to Arizona a few days later for business, and for both trips I carried only MAHI bags. they’re amazing quality, they’re versatile, and they pack really well. If you missed the video I made on packing tips for better travel, I’ll leave a link down below this article.
Mahi is giving The 40 over fashion community a special link along with a discount code that gets you a great deal on their bags so I highly encourage you guys to hit the link and go check out what they have to offer. Another thing I love about MAHI leather is that a portion of their sales go towards clean water charities in India. they also inspect their tanneries and workshops to ensure impeccable working conditions as well as an Eco-responsible approach to leather preparation.
As for materials, that’s kind of a personal preference thing. I have a Messenger bag that has a mix of leather and canvas, as well as briefcases and weekender bags that are made of leather. One thing I would advise is to invest a little bit more money into a nice bag, because if you like your bag and it’s durable and it works for your lifestyle, it’s something that you can use literally every single day. Another thing to think about when you’re considering a backpack or a messenger bag, is what you’re using it for and what you’ll be carrying. Since most of the time you’ll be caring around a laptop and other expensive items, it’s a good idea to get a bag that has a great design to prevent things from getting damaged when you’re carrying it.
Circling back to style for a moment, the lines have become a little bit blurred recently because these days backpacks are looking every bit as good as messenger bags as you can see here. Also, If you’re using a messenger bag with one shoulder strap, make sure the strap is long enough so the bag rests slightly below the hip. If it’s too high up on your body, it starts looking like a purse. Also with backpacks, make sure the straps are adjusted so the backpack actually sits on your back, I’m not down at your butt. Wearing it correctly higher on your back is a lot more comfortable as well as better for your posture.
And let’s not forget about organization. Like I mentioned, chances are you’ll be carrying a laptop and maybe some headphones, possibly your wallet, car keys and cell phone along with whatever else you need for that day. Make sure your backpack or messenger bag has different compartments to keep your small stuff all together to make sure that it doesn’t fall to the bottom of your bag where it becomes impossible to find. Also, having organization inside your bag prevents things from banging into each other and getting damaged or scratched.
Be sure to hit that link for MAHI leather and take advantage of the discount because even if you don’t need a bag for yourself, I bet you know someone on your Christmas list who could use one. Also, leave me a comment down below and let me know what type of bag you prefer.
