What’s going on guys. Today I’ll be showing you several different types and styles of vests out there and I’ll be sharing some tips on hos best to incorporate them into your wardrobe. Alright gentlemen, wearing a vest can easily set you apart from the crowd. Now, a vest is referred to as a waistcoat, but for this video, I’ll be referring to it as a vest. Whether you’re wearing one as part of a three-piece suit, wearing one on its own as the statement piece with trousers or chinos, or wearing one casually with a nice pair of jeans. It’s a great way to incorporate texture and also an additional layer of depth because there’s more going on with your outfit. It also adds a lot of visual interest because not a lot of guys know how to do this properly. Now, there are some rules I follow when incorporating a vest into my outfit, so let’s jump into it. But really quick, if you like this kind of men’s lifestyle content, please consider subscribing and turning on bell notifications because the entire reason this channel exists is to prove that it’s never too late and you’re never too old to start something new.
First let me show you a few different styles of vests that I have. This one is your traditional single-breasted vest with 6 buttons. As you can see, it can have pockets like this one has, or no pockets at all. This one also has the satin material on the backside with the traditional cinch strap adjuster.
This next one is similar to the first, but this one is designed with more of a scoop cut. It only has 4 buttons, two lower pockets, the cinching strap in the back and a really cool contrasting paisley pattern on the back.
Now we’re getting into some more decorative vests that tend to work best on their own in my opinion separate from a suit. As you can see, this one incorporates a notch lapel similar to what you might see on a suit jacket. It has 6 buttons, two lower pockets, the cinch strap on the back with light colored satin material.
This one is a bit different as you can tell because now we’re incorporating a double-breasted design with peak lapels. I like wearing this one because it’s different. It also uses a heavier soft material on the back instead of satin, and it incorporates button adjustments instead of a cinch strap.
The last one is coming at you with a single breasted, peak lapel design. It has 4 pockets, 6 buttons, a satin back with the traditional cinch strap. The difference here is with the full functional collar, unlike the others. This will add bulk underneath a suit jacket, so it’s best, in my opinion to wear this more casually without a suit.
Okay, a few other tips for you. The shirt you’re wearing should be well fitted and not too large. If the sleeves and the body of the shirt are too big and billowy, it’ll puff out around the arm openings of the vest and just look a little bit sloppy. Next, the vest should also be well fitted. It should actually hug your mid-section a bit without a lot of space between your shirt and your vest. If you have a lot of air space between your shirt and vest, the vest is too big. However, it shouldn’t be so tight that you look like a sausage either. The next tip is, never button the bottom button of your vest. The same rule that applies to your suit jackets and sport jackets also applies to your vest.
The next rule I like to follow is never have the vest be lighter than your shirt. Here’s an example; I wouldn’t wear a black shirt with a light color vest. I also follow the same rule when it comes to neckties. Personally, in my opinion, I think the black shirt, light vest, light tie looks really young. Like you’re 17 years old with a rented tux going to the prom or something. I always want my vest and my tie for that matter to be darker than my shirt.
The two light color tan vests I have are a little more tricky because I can really only wear a white shirt or a really light blue. The other vests allow a few more options, but I’m usually just going with a white shirt most of the time anyway so it makes things like matching a tie a lot easier, if I’m even wearing a tie. If you’re wondering what color shirt to wear with a vest, it’s really hard to go wrong with white.

Question.
I have two vests that I love, but I do not wear. These are very unique and cannot be replaced. The reason that I do not wear them is because I have an extra long torso and the vests leave a quarter to a half inch of shirt visible in the back above the belt line. I think that looks sloppy. I’ve seen models wear them that way, but that doesn’t make it ok.
What are your thoughts on the fit at the back waistline?
Thank you.

That’s a tough one because I know what you mean. For me, I think it looks best just hitting the belt line.
