So, I think a lot of guys can get a little intimidated by color and pattern matching. So let’s tackle color for a minute. I’m not gonna get too deep on this, but let’s take a look at the color wheel and talk about three basic rules you should know.
First you have Complimentary colors. These colors are opposite from each other on the wheel and will always complement each other. Next you have Analogous colors. These colors are similar to each other because as you can see, they live right next to each other on the color wheel and look great together. Next we have Triadic colors. These colors are spaced evenly apart in a triangle. These colors always complement each other, but it can be a little bold at times. But, would you ever think about mixing purple, orange and green together on your own? As you can see in the video above, it works.
Next, let’s talk about mixing patterns. To me, this is a lot easier than trying to figure out colors. Essentially, when you’re mixing patterns, just make sure the patterns are of a different size and scale. For example, it’s perfectly acceptable to mix stripes on stripes, just make sure the stripes are a different size and scale. Same rule applies for polka dot on polka dot, keep the size and scale (or spacing) different.
In the video posted above, I throw together a few different combinations from my own tie and pocket square collection, as well as a few provided by today’s sponsor, The Dark Knot. If you’re not familiar with The Dark Knot, they’re a men’s tie & accessories brand founded on the core philosophy of providing the market with affordable luxury accessories, all while providing style advice. For example, when you receive a tie, not only do you get a card with recommendations for matching attire with each item, but prior to your purchase, you can filter your search on their website based on your existing wardrobe & lifestyle needs. They provide Free Shipping Globally, along with a 30-Day Money Back Guarantee and 60-Day Exchange Policy.
They also partner with SOS Children’s Villages, which is a nonprofit dedicated to helping abandoned children requiring family care. A portion of their sales proceeds go towards SOS Children’s Villages on a monthly basis.
I’ll link to The Dark Knot right here and also provide you guys with a few discount codes they gave us.
You can get 20% off site-wide (including on sale items): with the discount code FOF20.
Or you can get 30% off orders over $199 (including on sale items) with this discount code FOF30.
