First up, tuck your shirt in. I realize that the untucked shirt is having a moment right now and actually has been for quite some time. I also realize that there’s a few companies specifically making shorter shirts that are meant to be work untucked, and I even own a few. But if you want to step things up and appear a lot more stylish, tuck that shirt in.
Second, take some of your clothes to a local tailor. If you have a few shirts that are a little baggy, or maybe some trousers that are a little too long or need to be tapered in from the knee down, round up a few items and go see your local tailor. Wearing well-tailored clothing can make a world of difference to your silhouette for not a lot of money. If you don’t believe me, take a look at this piece I wrote back in 2014 called; “Are your clothes making you look fat” where I try on clothes to show you the difference between loose fitting items and trim fit items.
Next, wear nicer shoes. Stop wearing athletic sneakers everywhere, especially out with your significant other on a Saturday night. I just posted a video on “How to wear dress shoes with jeans”, so please feel free to watch that one. It’s incredibly easy to incorporate a nice pair of dress shoes into your outfit and the payoff is 10-fold. This instantly makes you look like a grownup that commands a certain level of respect, and if you’re single, here’s a bonus top: Women notice shoes very quickly.
Next up on my list, wear darker colors. Wearing darker colors like black and dark navy will not only help you appear slimmer, but also help you appear more stylish. The reason is in the simplicity, because a simple dark outfit with little distractions allows the attention to be on you, not what you’re wearing. Dark colors are also a little more mysterious, so again, if you’re single, this could help.
Lastly, start wearing a sport jacket. A well-fitting, two button sport jacket (with a pocket square of course) will elevate your style in just about any setting without being over-dressed. It’s a classic garment that should be a staple in your wardrobe. The slight shoulder padding will help your shoulders appear more broad, the sweep of the lapels will help make your chest appear more muscular, and the button enclosure helps to give your torso that “V”-taper we all want. Swap out the lightweight bomber jacket for a sport jacket on your next dinner date.

Good stuff. One problem I have. I want to wear more sports jackets and dress more stylish, but living in California and working in tech, I tend to feel over dressed. I went to one gathering wearing a jacket and everyone was wearing graphic t-shirts! Do you ever feel that way?
Johng says
Hey Michael, Thanks for your comment! I do feel that way sometimes, but I’ve come to be comfortable being the best dressed guy in the room. I think you have to gauge your events and you’ll start to realize what the typical uniform is. There’s lots of ways you can dress down a sport jacket. Try wearing jeans & sneakers, or (although I normally donb’t advise this), wear a t-shirt under the jacket or a casual shirt untucked. This way you can loose the jacket if it’s too much. Also, once you start dressing better, you might find that people around you will start to pay more attention to you and guys in your circle will start to level up their style also.

Thanks for the reply and advice. I have definitely noticed guys dressing up a bit more in the office as I tend to do so and compliment my
attire.
